Clayton News, Jonesboro

To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I would like to express condolences to the family, colleagues and many friends of retired Clayton Judicial Circuit Superior Court Judge William H. “Bill” Ison of Jonesboro after his passing at the age of 87.

After graduating from John Marshall Law School in 1968, Judge Ison began his legal career in private practice in Jonesboro before his appointment as assistant district attorney for Clayton County in 1972. He was appointed in 1977 as a Superior Court judge for the Clayton Circuit, where he served for 26 years and was chief judge from 1993 until his retirement in 2003.

Judge Ison also served the legal profession and justice system as president of the Clayton County Bar Association and the Georgia District Attorneys Association and as chair of the Criminal Law Section of the State Bar of Georgia. He also served his community in numerous capacities, including chair of the Tara District of Boy Scouts and as lieutenant governor of the 16th Division of the Georgia District of Kiwanis International.

Judge Bill Ison’s long and exemplary career of service is an inspiration to all Georgia lawyers and judges. We are appreciative of his many generous contributions to the legal system in our state. He will be missed and fondly remembered.

Sincerely,

Elizabeth L. Fite
President, State Bar of Georgia
