Letter to the Editor

Congratulations to Emmet Bondurant on selection for ABA Medal

Daily Report

To the Editor:

On behalf of the State Bar of Georgia, I am writing to extend congratulations to Emmet J. Bondurant, founder of Bondurant Mixson & Elmore LLP in Atlanta, on the announcement of his selection to receive the 2024 ABA Medal from the American Bar Association.

Mr. Bondurant is most deserving of this prestigious national recognition of his nearly 65 years of distinguished and impactful law practice, particularly his career-long advocacy for equal protection under the law in voting rights, indigent defense, racial justice, gender equality and other areas, arguing many of these cases before the U.S. Supreme Court.

He has also demonstrated a longstanding commitment to equal justice through his own pro bono representation of some of Georgia’s most vulnerable citizens and his work to improve indigent defense in the criminal justice system—having served as the first chair of the Georgia Public Defender Standards Council upon its establishment in 2003.

All Georgia lawyers can be proud of our colleague Emmet Bondurant on his selection as this year’s recipient of the ABA Medal, which is bestowed for “exceptionally distinguished service … to the cause of American jurisprudence” and has been presented over the years to numerous U.S. Supreme Court justices and other nationally prominent Americans.

We add our applause to Mr. Bondurant’s remarkable legal career and thank him for his many contributions in service to the public and justice system.

Sincerely,

J. Antonio “Tony” DelCampo
President, State Bar of Georgia
