Fraudulent Emails to Bar Members

Important Announcement in speech bubble
We have received numerous calls and emails alerting us to a fraudulent email being distributed from an account ending in @member-gabar.org, which appeared to be from President Ivy N. Cadle with the subject line “GABAR – xxxxxx” where xxx is a law firm name.

While these happen from time to time, we are not aware of anything that has impacted our systems. However, if you have received one of these fraudulent emails, please do not respond or click on any attachments. Delete it immediately. These emails are NOT from the State Bar of Georgia or the president and may contain links to files that open malicious software. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please email jenniferm@gabar.org.

Here are some key steps to help you identify and avoid spoofed/phishing emails:

  • Verify the sender. Check the sender's email address carefully. Phishing emails often use addresses that look similar to legitimate ones but have slight variations. Legitimate emails from the State Bar will come from a recognized domain @gabar.org. However, it is also important to know that email addresses can be spoofed, so scam emails can sometimes appear to come from a legitimate source.
  • Question requests for confidential information. Be cautious of unexpected requests for confidential information or documents, especially when they create urgency.
  • Hover over links. Before clicking on any links in emails, hover your mouse over them to see the actual URL they lead to. Be wary of URLs that do not match the purported destination.
  • Look for grammatical errors and generic greetings. Phishing emails often contain grammatical errors or use generic greetings instead of addressing you by name.
  • Report suspicious emails. If you receive a phishing email, report it to your IT staff immediately for further investigation.
If you receive an email that appears to have come from the State Bar of Georgia and seems suspicious, do not hesitate to contact the Bar directly to verify its authenticity.
