Savannah – Stephanie Joy Kirijan, a Buckhead resident, has finished her term as president of the Young Lawyers Division (YLD) of the State Bar of Georgia. She turned over the gavel to incoming President Jonathan Pannell of Savannah on June 1 during the organization’s annual meeting. The YLD has more than 10,000 members statewide who are lawyers under the age of 36 or have less than five years of practice.
During her term, the YLD celebrated its 65th anniversary with a theme of inclusive leadership. Through inclusive leadership, the YLD reached out to the group’s membership across the state and improved the public perception of lawyers through community service. The appointed board of directors was the most inclusive in the organization’s history. Attendance at YLD meetings increased by 30 percent and represented a diverse cross section of State Bar members. The YLD also hosted two statewide conferences for affiliate organizations and a Leadership Academy which mentored 40 young lawyers from every corner of Georgia interested in developing their leadership skills as well as learning more about their profession, their communities and their state. The YLD also partnered with the Office of the Attorney General to organize the first statewide Legal Food Frenzy, a contest among the state’s legal community to benefit the Georgia’s seven regional food banks. To celebrate Georgia Legal Services Program’s 40th anniversary, the YLD raised close to $94,000 to benefit GLSP through two fundraisers and a Call to Service challenge among young lawyers.
Kirijan, external communication manager at Southern Company, is a graduate of the University of Georgia and earned her J.D. degree from the Georgia State University School of Law. She previously served as an assistant district attorney in the Stone Mountain Judicial Circuit and as the district attorney’s public information officer and, more recently, worked as a senior staff attorney with Georgia Power.
She was a founding member of the DeKalb County Bar Association Young Lawyers Division and a member of the founding class of the State Bar of Georgia YLD Leadership Academy. Kirijan received awards for her service to the bar in 2007, 2008 and 2009. She also served as treasurer, secretary and president-elect of the YLD and co-editor of The YLD Review, the newsletter of the YLD.
The YLD has been strengthened over the years through guidance by the State Bar of Georgia, its Executive Committee and Board of Directors, the Supreme Court, and through dedicated service rendered by its members. In keeping with its motto of “working for the profession and the public,” the YLD has more than 25 hard-working committees that produce an array of projects and programs. Through the years, the YLD has also gained national recognition by winning several American Bar Association awards for its projects and publications.
