To the Editor:

The State Bar of Georgia extends congratulations and thanks to longtime Atlanta Legal Aid Society Executive Director Steve Gottlieb on the announcement of his retirement at the end of this year.

Mr. Gottlieb joined Atlanta Legal Aid, which provides legal assistance to residents of metro Atlanta who cannot afford to hire a lawyer, as an intern when he was a law student in 1968. He became executive director in 1980, and over the past 42 years has led the society through an expansion of its core legal services and its geographic reach in the metro area.

Under his leadership, Atlanta Legal Aid also created new programs to respond to the needs of vulnerable populations, including people with AIDS and cancer, people with disabilities and homeowners subject to predatory mortgage lending. With generous support from the legal profession and public at large, the society now assists tens of thousands of Fulton, DeKalb, Cobb, Gwinnett and Clayton County residents each year.

We commend Steve Gottlieb for his many contributions to the cause of “justice for all” during his admirable career, and we wish him well in the remainder of his tenure at the helm of Atlanta Legal Aid and in the years ahead.

Sincerely,

Sarah B. “Sally” Akins
President, State Bar of Georgia
