Competition Information

We are planning a 100% in-person full season for the first time since 2019.

While not yet officially adopted by the Rules Subcommittee, we expect the 2023 season will be structured like this:

Regions

Regional competitions will return to three rounds. Teams will switch sides between rounds 1 and 2. Sides for round 3 will be determined by a coin toss or similar method.

Region Saturday will be February 4. Some regions will have their round 1 on Friday evening, the 3rd. Region 16 (Atlanta) will have rounds on Sunday the 5th and Tuesday the 7th.

The top three teams from each region advance to District as usual. (Exception: If we add two regions, as now appears possible, and several regions have fewer than eight teams, we may combine three smaller regions to make a district, and in that case, the top two teams from those regions advance.)

Districts

District competitions will also go back to three rounds, as in 2020. Two regions (subject to the caveat above) will come together for a district, with the top two teams from each district advancing to the State Finals. The District competitions will take place in-person on Saturday, March 4 and (for District II, Atlanta/Marietta) Sunday, March 5.

Teams will switch sides between rounds 1 and 2. Sides for round 3 will be determined by a coin toss or similar method.

State Finals

The top 16 teams after Districts will meet at the Gwinnett Justice and Administration Center on Saturday and Sunday, March 18 and 19. The State Champion will be eligible to represent Georgia at the National High School Mock Trial Championship (see below).

The Craig Harding Memorial Court Artist Contest

The Craig Harding Memorial Court Artist Contest will take place during the Regional Competitions in February. Each competing team will be able to register up to three artists for the contest. Each contestant will produce a drawing for judging. The judges will choose Region Champion Court Artists, and from those Region Champions, name a State Champion and State Finalist Court Artist.

The Georgia State Champion will have the opportunity to compete in the National Courtroom Artist Contest at the 2023 National High School Mock Trial Championship in Little Rock, Arkansas, the weekend of May 18-21.

More information about the 2023 Contest can be found on the Court Artist Contest's page.

The National High School Mock Trial Championship

The Georgia State Champion qualifies to compete in the National High School Mock Trial Championship. The NHSMTC will take place the weekend of May 18-21, 2023, in Little Rock, AR.
